Po drodze Yusuf odwiedza wiele różnych miejsc, spotyka rozmaitych ludzi i stopniowo zaczyna rozumieć, jak złożony i często surowy potrafi być świat.","nodeType":"text"}],"nodeType":"paragraph"},{"data":{},"content":[{"data":{},"marks":[],"value":"Autor przenosi nas do barwnej, tętniącej życiem Afryki Wschodniej, w której do dziś współistnieją rozmaite kultury, religie i języki — na długo przed tym, jak europejskie mocarstwa podporządkowały sobie ten region. Pokazuje też dawne układy sił: fakt, że część Afrykanów była właścicielami niewolników, oraz rywalizację lokalnych i zagranicznych kupców o kontrolę nad szlakami handlowymi. W wielu aspektach powieść Gurnaha jest dialogiem z „Jądrem ciemności” Josepha Conrada. Lektura pozwoliła mi lepiej zrozumieć historię Afryki i przełomowe zmiany, przed jakimi stanęła na początku XX wieku. Już choćby z tego względu cieszę się, że sięgnąłem po tę książkę. It was eye-opening to see that slavery wasn’t only something done by white Europeans; it also existed within African societies, tied to older trade systems. In general, reading this novel gave me a better understanding of Africa’s history and the big changes it was facing around the start of the 20th century. For that reason alone, I’m glad I read
